A Re-examination of Network Address Translation Security

The use ofNetwork Address Translation (NA T) hasgreatly expanded in recent years. While originally an addressmanagement technique it has often been used for security.However, there are many implementations of NAT that areinherently insecure. Recently investigation into some of thesehas shown increased potential for security holes in NATdeployments. An understanding of the risks associated withNA T and the basic networking topics supporting a research inthis area are critical to an information assurance student. Thispaper d escribes the basic operation of NA T outlines one suchsecuntry probiem and it's mitigation, develops a testinginethadology for use in information security curricula andsuggests topics to be coveredfor student success.
