Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly changing the way we interact and gain information about ourselves and external world. Smart Transportation, Smart Energy, Smart Healthcare and Smart Waste Management are few of the areas where IoT has been proven to be cost-effective and efficient in tackling the inherent problems and weaknesses. Based on the IoT paradigm, a prototype of a cloud-based end-to-end Smart Attendance System has been developed which attempts to solve the problems of manual attendance system prevalent in school and colleges by performing automated attendance record generation, reporting, monitoring and alert generation for different stakeholders of the educational institute. To reduce the overall time required to take the attendance in the class the attendance device is made portable, so that it can be easily circulated among students to mark their attendance. The system has been tested and results are encouraging to catapult further study and research in this area.
