This paper is designed to address aspects of the immense contribution of Sir Alan CottrellFRS FREng FICF (1919–2012).Especially in the context of Cottrell's key role in the creation anddevelopment of ICF—to be presented at the ICF13 Memorial International Cottrell Symposium.One theme of this paper builds on the ICF4 contribution of Cottrell 'Fracture & Society' in 1977(available on www.icf-wasi.org) through a series of 2012 focussed discussions with mainly formerstudents & colleagues of Cottrell at Birmingham & Cambridge (e.g.Trevor Churchman,Cottrell'sfirst PhD student,Dr Geoffrey Cottrell his son,John Knott,John Griffiths,Bill Tyson,successors/colleagues at Cambridge in for example the Goldsmiths Chair,such as Sir Colin Humphreys,Tony Kelly,Lindsay Greer,Dai Jones,Sir Graeme Davies and others such as Dame Julia King,Robert Ritchie,Subra Surfish from Cottrell-inspired spin-off research.
