Synchrotron radiation laminography allows for 3D in-situ assessment of laterally extended sheet-like specimens with sizes of several centimetres in lateral dimensions and 1 mm in the thickness dimension.3D digital volume correlation has recently been used to assess displacement fields in 3D by using in-situ 3D x-ray tomography images.The intrinsic contrast due to microstructural heterogeneities is used in these cases as 'natural 3D speckles'.
