Navigation system for neuroendoscopic surgery

Many neurosurgeons already applies the concept of neuroendoscopic surgery. Applying a smaller surgical field is not sufficient, but a safe, rapid, and effctive operation is also required to reduce the invasion. In order to approach small spaced and critical lesion, technology of augmented reality and navigation is necessary for endoscopic neurosurgery. Recent medical imaging technology developments, such as three-dimensional computed graphic images based on computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have changed the surgical approach and the navigation. Interactive iamge-guided neuroendoscopic surgery implies minimally invasive tehcniques that translate into reliable superimposed image guidance system. This endoscopic navigation system provides the surgeon useful navigational information usually in the form of position and/or orientation of the tip of endoscope and the three-dimensional superimposed computer graphic image of the important structures around the target. This paper introduces our neuroendoscopic navigation system based on augmented reality.
