The integration of solar PV sources to the grid significantly reduces the dependence on non-renewable energy sources for power requirements. This leads to the reduction in the stored kinetic energy of the system and the systems capability to overcome the power mismatch between power supply and demand gets affected. This paper presents a novel frequency control strategy of grid-connected PV system with the estimated system inertia. In the proposed method PV is forced participate in inertial response by shifting its operating point away from maximum power point only when the system inertia is not satisfactory to address initial frequency excursion. Simulation study for the frequency control is performed on the 14-bus IEEE test system in the presence of high penetration of PV sources.
