Lithium-iron phosphate, LiFePO_4, has been considered as an attractive cathode material for rechargeable lithium batteries due to its relatively low cost, high thermal stability, high capacity, good cycleability, flat discharge plateau and environmental benefits. Unfortunately, the potential low-cost advantage is not realized if expensive Fe~(2+) precursor compounds are used as the starting materials. The urgent necessity is to produce LiFePCU starting from cheaper Fe~(3+) precursors.
