COORDINATION OF SURGE ARRESTERS IN THE LOW VOLTAGE FIELD

The coordination of two surge arresters in the low voltage field has been thoroughly discussed up to now. This subject is especially dealt with in DEC. The problem is that nowadays, due to a lot of papers published and to study results apparently conflicting with the experience, it is very difficult for someone who intends to install a surge arrester to know how to coordinate its arresters. This paper explains that one of the major reason for this situation is that the real characteristics of the arresters, needed for performing the coordination study, are difficult to get except for the manufacturer itself. It is shown too that between the theoretical studies and the practical cases many differences exist which need to be addressed. After having listed the relevant parameters based on an analytical study, many tests and computer models have been developed in order to clarify the situation and give practical guidance. At the end a new criterion is proposed for the coordination which seems more practical than the present one discussed in IEC.
