This paper presents a higher order spectrum (HOS) analysis in condition monitoring and fault diagnosis of induction motors. Particular attention is paid on third-order spectrum, called the bispectrum. The characteristic frequencies of faults and their harmonics are detected through bispectrum analysis of vibration. Experimental studies show that the bispectrum patterns of different faults are quite different. Therefore the bispectrum is capable of providing adequate and extra information to identify the faults in induction motors.
