Abstract: Compared with other kinds of diffractive optical elements (DOEs), the harmonic diffractive optical element (HDOE) is analyzed, and some important results including its dispersion are deduced and presented in this paper. Its inherent advantages and characteristics are analyzed and concluded, and then several applications including imaging in the wide wavelength band, multicolor optical Fourier transform system, and multicolor scanning system are suggested. The harmonic diffractive optical elements or systems have small volume and strong potentials in the applications of achromatic multi- wavelength multi-order diffraction, so it is promised that HDOE will be useful in the field of integrated photo- electronics. !6
