Damage to Mountain and River Basin Ecosystems and Recovery in Chongqing

Chongqing is located in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the region where the eastern and western parts of China meet. Chongqing has a land area of 82 400 square kilometers and a population of more than 30 million. Chongqing is one of nationally key areas for ecological construction. Since a large part of the reservoir of Three Gorges Dam is located within the territory of Chongqing, it is of great strategic importance for ensuring the long-term safe transportation of the reservoir, promoting the sustainable social and economic development to prevent the degradation and damage of mountain e-cosystems, reducing the entry of soil and sand into the river, improving the ecological environment of the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River, particularly in the reservoir area, and controlling fundamentally flood disasters.
