SSDM – A Semantic System Development Methodology

This paper presents SSDM (Semantic SystemrnDevelopment Methodology) that goes from a naturalrnlanguage description of requirements to anrnimplementation of a database application. A broadrnbackground survey on the difficulties facing requirementrnengineering is first given to illustrate the importance ofrnrequirement engineering. One of the major challenges, therndifficulty of translating from informality to formality, isrnreviewed in detail. We then introduce SSDM, focusing onrnthe requirements specification of database applications.rnSSDM utilizes a limited set of natural language sentencesrnto describe the data model requirements, the query modelrnrequirements, and the rule requirements. The naturalrnlanguage sentences are transformed to Structured NaturalrnLanguage (SNL), which is supported by an objectrelationalrninfrastructure called SemanticObjects. At last,rnconsistency checking is performed to ensure therncorrectness of the database models. A detailed example isrngiven to illustrate SSDM.
