The “caused by” condition for any electrical fault cannbe determined by a thorough and carefully executed analysis. As soon asnnew equipment is installed, a process of normal deterioration begins.nElectrical equipment failure, not attributed to misapplication,ntransient overvoltage or heavily loaded joints and connections usuallyninvolves deterioration of enclosure and degradation of insulation.nExperience shows that electrical equipment lasts longer when covered byna preventive maintenance program. Proper performance of electricalnequipment is often directly dependent on the maintenance beingnperformed. An effective electrical preventive and predictive maintenancenprogram requires knowledge of the possible causes of electricalnequipment malfunctions or failures. A key factor in developing andnimplementing an electrical preventive and predictive maintenance programnis the communication of the need of such an activity by the electricalnpersonnel involved. Proper communication skills must be used during theninvestigation of an electrical failure in order to find the actual causenof the fault. The sources of information on why the equipment faulted isnobtained by analyzing the equipment condition and/or interviewing thenpersonnel involved at the time of the fault. The investigation needs tonbe thorough and detailed so the roof cause of the incident is found andncorrective actions can be taken to prevent it from happening again.nTechnologists must communicate the problems and identify correctivenactions to the owners of the equipment that had the problems so thenowners can understand the actions they need to take and the implicationsnof any changes on operability and longevity
