Abstract: The proposed Beagle 2 lander for ESA's 2003 MarsExpress mission will be described. The aim of Beagle 2will be to search for organic material on and below thesurface of Mars in addition to a study of the inorganicchemistry and mineralogy of the landing site. Thelander will utilize a small rover equipped with amechanical and grinder to obtained samples from belowthe surface, under rocks, and inside rocks. Sampleswill be returned to the lander for analysis. Analysisperformed by Beagle 2 will include examination ofsamples with an optical microscope and APX andMossbauer Spectrometers as well as a search fororganics and a measurement of their isotopiccomposition. The lander systems design as well as theexperiment configuration will be described. !8
