Water pollution is a worldwide severe problem for social development; sewage disposal has faced a new challenge. In order to keep the high-effect sewage disposal, this paper presents a new method to build the sewage disposal monitoring networks based on fiber optical sensing and geographical information system (GIS). A new fiber optic chemical sensor has been invented to measure the content of firedamp in sewage disposal. The sensor is installed closing to the water surface in the way of sewage pond and letting-off source. Its sensitivity is 3E-3 mg per liter. Collected Data by fiber optical sensor are transmitted through public telecom system, and data are disposed in the monitoring center. The entire monitoring network is built based on GIS. With the application of GIS and fiber optical sensing, the pollution position with high methane can be instantly found and displayed in the screen of the monitoring center. The system has been proved in laboratory.
