The 2006 International Building Code states that walls, partitions, and floor-ceiling assemblies separating dwelling units from each other or from public or service areas shall have a sound transmission class of not less than 50 (45 if field tested) for airborne noise. It also states that floor-ceiling assemblies between dwelling units or between a dwelling unit and a public or service area within the structure shall have an impact insulation class rating of not less than 50 (45 if field tested). In North America, it has become a recent trend to construct multi-family dwellings from lightweight steel and concrete assemblies. If designed and constructed appropriately, these structures have the ability to meet the minimum code requirements. However, flanking sound transmission paths are often difficult to control with lightweight constructions. Failing to seal penetrations appropriately also add to airborne and structure-borne noise concerns. Inspections and field measurements from various multi-family dwellings were completed. Design, inspections, and measurements from one such successful project are presented and discussed.
