The hard coal produced in the Zonguldak region and lignites produced in the various parts of the country have high ash and sulphur contents and low calorific values. If these coals are burned as mined from pits, they pollute the air due to high sulphur and smoke emissions. The purpose of this research is to produce a less pollutant domestic fuel by first briquetting and then carbonizing these coals. The first step was to ground the Zonguldak and Soma/Merkez coals to -3.0m and prepare mixtures of varying properties. Then those mixtures were briquetted on a Roll-Press to an egg form and carbonized in a chamber coke furnace between 500-900 deg C in four various temperatures. The coked briquettes so obtained were tested for abrasion strength and crushing strength in three dimensions to determine the best carbonization temperature and the blend composition that contain the highest Soma/Merkez proportion that will produce a domestic fuel. The optimal conditions were found to be 40percent Soma/Merkez coal blend and a carbonization temperature of 740 deg C based on mechanical strength parameters. Further, the stove combustion tests carried out with these briquettes showed that they were suitable for domestic heating purposes.
