Lignite mining in the Lusatian mining region meaned a drastic impact on the household of nature landscape of the whole region. As estates of the extensive mining and coal processing activities in the past, the Lusatian Lignite mining region, similar to the Middle German Lignite region, represents large unrecultivated areas and contaminated soils. The remediation of these areas belongs to the most important projects in order to reestablish the complex ecological balance in Germany. It is a scientific, technological and financial challenge. This paper presents the main problems of the remediation works concerning the decontamination of soils.
