The leafhopper and planthopper species make damages to the plant epidermides and parenchyma by their stylets and suck the plant sap from the phloem. Among the phloem-feeding insects in rice, the green rice leafhopper (GRH), Nephotettix cincticeps Uhler, is a major insect pest of cultivated rice and is distributed mostly in temperate regions of East Asia (Ghauri 1971). The GRH sucks sap from both the xylem and phloem of susceptible rice varieties, leading to yield loss particularly in northeast Japan (Nirei and Naka-zato 1975). In addition to direct plant destruction, the insect also causes damage to rice plants by transmitting other viral diseases, including the rice dwarf and waika viruses seen commonly in western Japan (Nakasuji and Nomura 1968).
