The disk drive industry requires spindle motors that are ever more demanding for high performance. Recent trends have increased the spindle speeds to 7200 and 10,000 rpm, which compounds potential acoustic issues. This paper investigates the influence of all magnetic radial, tangential and axial forces on vibration and acoustic noise. The force harmonic content is determined and compared under different dynamic conditions such as centered stator, radial eccentricity and axial offsct stator. Motor polc and tooth configurations are studied. Measurement analysis of vibration and acoustic noise data emphasize the typical excitation frequencies. A lumped permeance model [1] supports the numerical analysis of the motor performance and a complete investigation of the influences of differnect motor parameters.
