A top-own scenario based approach is a typical method generating the productrnbreakdown structure (PBS) in systems engineering. While it takes time and effort to perform thernscenario based PBS construction, it is the safest approach not to omit any functions. On the otherrnhand, a design structure matrix (DSM) approach to PBS construction is a bottom-up approachrnbased on modularization concept that provides a merit of quick PBS construction while the sanityrnof its results may not be assured.rnAccordingly, this study presents trade-off results between the two approaches to uncover problemsrnin the DSM-based clustering method and proposes improvement approaches to enable therninterfaces with external systems, static elements, as well as a new capability to handle the largernnumber of clustering elements.
