Traditional systems engineering is tailored to systems with complex subsystemsrnhaving well-described physical and functional attributes and interfaces. Moreover, a networkrnsystem generally features precisely defined communication signal and data protocols. Wernsubmit that development of swarming networks that do not exhibit such discrete linearrnattributes represents a new class of systems that can benefit from a new approach to systemsrnengineering methodology. We will describe the new systems engineering concept ofrn“near-neighbor interaction zones” for systems engineering processes and apply this approachrnto a case study of one such system, an automated swarming intrusion detection network tornalleviate the monitoring burden on security operators. The result is a large-scale complexrnsystem that is potentially more tractable and efficient to develop and operate from a humanrncognition perspective.
