QoS Control in MANETs – A State-of-the-ArtPerspective

This paper examines the state-of-the-art of Quality of Service (QoS) control forrnwireless Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANETs) based on an exhaustive literature searchrncomprising over 70 journal papers and conference proceedings and standardization development,rnper the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Internet Engineering Task Force.rnSite visits to selected United States Government facilities augmented this literature search byrnaddressing ―real-world‖ models for a comprehensive series of follow-on simulations and analyses.rnThis paper defines prominent QoS metrics, such as throughput, delay, packet delivery rate andrnjitter and then proposes that design parameters, such as data rate, packet size, transmitted power,rnetc., influence QoS in a way to formulate a Multi-Objective Function (from the QoS metrics)rnsubject to constraints (from design factors) that will solve an optimization problem usingrnevolutionary computation techniques. This research will foster improvements for data link layerrnand network layer protocols optimizing QoS control.
