This research considers that in a supply chain system, the production facility purchases the raw materials fromrnoutside suppliers and processes the raw materials to deliver a fixed quantity of finished products to retailers (orrncustomers) at a fixed-interval of time. Also, the raw materials are replenished instantaneously to manufacturingrnsystem to meet the just-in-time (JIT) operation. This research also focuses on reducing the downtime or idle time ofrnthe production facilities. To reduce the idle time of production, it is assumed that the production of succeeding cyclernstarts just after the production of preceding cycle. A total system cost function model is developed considering thatrnthe production facility is idle only during the setup time of succeeding uptime or production time. Also, thernproduction start time is evaluated to reduce initial inventory carrying cost. An integer approximation is adopted tornimprove the optimal solution and the solution is validated through a numerical simulation.
