The use of renewable generation and energy storage with actively managed curtailment schemes is investigated. A heuristic optimisation algorithm is presented that maximises the revenue available to the operator of a storage system that time-shifts curtailed generation, and trades by buying and selling power on an electricity market. The algorithm is applied to a case study of a distribution network curtailment scheme with a generic storage device. It is found that allowing a storage unit to both trade with the market, and time-shift curtailed generation generates greater revenue that operating in either mode individually. A Last-In-First-Out scheme of small wind farms in a curtailment scheme is modelled to show the effect of including storage. Finally it is noted that the role of renewable subsidies is important for the encouragement of efficient storage technologies.
