Electric power distribution systems are undergoing an unparalleled evolution driven by the proliferation of Distributed Generation (DG) and particularly by the need to accommodate growing levels of photovoltaic power penetration. The intermittent ad uncontrollable nature of these resources impacts the distribution system under both operation and planning scenarios. This paper discusses utilizing alternative operation modes of distribution feeders, namely a meshed structure, to increase allowable penetration level of Distributed Generation. Some of the factors that limit proliferation of DGs in the distribution system are first discussed. Then, the advantages of a meshed network structure with respect to these limiting factors are presented. Results in terms of maximum allowable penetration of DG for a test system are also presented and compared to results for the same test system with an updated meshed structure.
