A broadband trial network and its availability analysis

To coincide the establishment of National Information Infrastructure and to promote the trial of broadband services, an ATM broadband trial network has been constructed in Taiwan since July 1995. The network is based on ATM products, including ATM Virtual Path switches, ATM multiplexers, and optical amplifiers, developed at Telecommunication Laboratories. the network can provide permanent virtual path connection with both DS1 and DS3 circuit emulations. Many services and applications, including video conference, video on demand, telemedicine, LAN interconnection, and distance learning have been provided on the network. To keep the network highly reliable, a network availability model has been proposed and applied to analyze the availability of the network during the trial period. The trial experience shows a positive result of the broadband trial network toward the usage of commercialization.
