Analysis of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator Through Modeling and Simulation

The Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is the most commonly used machine in wind farms of the modern power industry. Its popularity is as a result of the need for the smaller size of converters, ease of independent control mechanism by using two converters at rotor and grid sides. The Adama-II wind farm uses one of this kind of generators where its stator is directly connected to the grid and the rotor via Rotor Side Converter (RSC) and Grid Side Converter (GSC) operating at higher switching frequencies. This paper focuses on the analysis of the DFIG with its modeling and DC link voltage control with simulations under load current step changes. The stability of the system is also analyzed. The model matches with the actual factory test results and hence can be the best reference for further works in the area. MATLAB-Simulink/PowerSim is used for simulation environment.
