In this paper, a unit commitment model is presented for island systems connected to the mainland through parallel ac and dc interconnectors. The main goal is to determine the hourly economic dispatch of all generating units, leading to maximum penetration of renewables and minimization of total operating costs. The analysis is performed in GAMS using the Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) method, where all essential constraints, such as the required operating reserves, transmission capacity constraints and technical limits of the generating units and interconnectors, are properly accounted for. Crete is selected as the study-case system, whose interconnection to the Greek mainland is currently being planned with parallel ac and dc links.
