Modelling of network reliability of OHL networks using information and communication technologies

This paper introduces a methodology that allows investigating the impact of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) implemented within a Smart Grid framework. Such implementations are of imperative importance to overcome the current needs for increased network utilization and connection of renewable energy sources. Common applications include Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and Time Varying Line Rating (TVLR) on power networks. The proposed methodology uses Sequential Monte Carlo and an improved electro-thermal modeling of overhead lines. The evaluation of the impact of the ICT failures implemented within TVLR control and monitoring interfaces is performed on the IEEE-RTS 96 network. The studies indicate that ICT failures of TVLR systems result in doubling the frequency of load curtailment while they have relatively small impact on expected energy not served by the network.
