A Wide Bandwidth Low-Profile Top-Loaded Pyramidal Antenna

A low-profile wideband antenna is presented that uses a square pyramidal monopole radiator top-loaded with an etched copper-cladded dielectric. The proposed top-loading configuration along with a pair of shorting strips enables input impedance matching at reduced frequencies while maintaining a very low-profile (0.063 λ at the lowest operational frequency of 900 MHz). The measured impedance bandwidth is 900 MHz to 13.6 GHz for a 3:1 VSWR, and monopole-like radiation patterns are obtained from 900 MHz to 11 GHz. The proposed design is relatively easy to fabricate, is low-cost, and has a very wide bandwidth for its size.
