Issues related to the efficient embedding of interprocessorcommunications required by parallel implementations ofintermediate-level vision tasks are discussed. The performance ofalternative embeddings of the interprocessor communications required byspecific tasks at the intermediate level of vision has been analyzed,and quantitative results have been obtained and compared to the resultsof corresponding implementations on the Connection Machine. In thequantitative analysis, the cost of communication primitives supported bythis machine, characteristics of the task, and parameters which arecharacteristic of image content are taken into account. Based on theresult of this analysis, a methodology is suggested for selecting themost efficient implementation of interprocessor communications amongdifferent alternatives
