Loss reduction of WBG inverter by PWM techniques for the motion control of PMSM

This paper focuses on PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) techniques for loss reduction in inverter application for the motion control of PMSM. Classical SVPWM (Space Vector PWM) is commonly used for the motion control in order to reduce current ripple in motors. The DPhiPWM, proposed in this study, is a new discrete PWM method adapted to the load (motor) characteristics, in order to minimize inverter switching losses by preventing commutation where switching losses are the highest (usually at the peak values of current load), even when motor operates at flux-weakening region. Analytical model to precisely estimate current for motor control and inverter losses is experimentally verified by results from a 15kW/540V SiC inverter prototype driving a PMSM for aeronautic applications.
