This article shows two issues studies about using the IoT paradigm in the public service sector applications. There is one of them, which is in the electric power industry, and another one on smart metering of water consumption. It shows implementation of hardware, software and middleware, the functionality of the systems and performance evaluation. The goal is to demonstrate that it is something technical and economically viable to use ubiquitous wireless communications systems in utilities industry, through current communication protocols. Moreover, the use of the MQTT Protocol for communication between devices, which provides satisfactory performance being applied, has been prove.
