The Automotive industry is one of the most important industries worldwide and has surpassed total revenue of approx. 1.5 bn Euro in 2017. With the advent of innovative sensor technologies and intelligent signal processing algorithms the functionalities of vehicles advanced driver assistant systems (ADAS) have been significantly expanded. Today's vehicles make use of a manifold of different types of ADAS. These innovations have also raised the demand for more performant safety and security protection against cyber-attacks. Thus, the automakers and their Tier 1 suppliers are faced with the problem of vehicular cyber security issues. Therefore, the paper introduces into cyber security as body of knowledge about technologies, processes, and practices to protect vehicular ADAS, networks, programs, and data from cyber-attacks, damages, or unauthorized access. Based on this knowledge, the paper focuses on the essential needs in vehicle cyber security and discusses possible solutions and options how to protect critical and crucial vehicle systems and components against known threats.
