Partial discharge (PD) analysis is a reliable diagnostic tool to assess the integrity and the quality of electrical insulation of power systems. Cable, insulator, bushing, power transformer, and other related parts of electrical equipment are used in the power system network. Spherical void in the insulation of the high voltage cable is assumed as origin of partial discharge (PD) and it may lead to heavy damage to the insulating system. This paper presents experimental PD test measurements as a function of void size, applied voltage and three capacitor type models for partial discharge simulation using MATLAB Simulink for 11 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable with void by implementing the standard PD model. For detection the imperfect XLPE insulation, the partial discharge detection method is used. The initiation of PD pulses in 11kV high voltage XLPE cable is presented with charge waveform and resulting PD pulses.
