The paper presents an approach for modelling and performance analysis of a fuel cell-battery hybrid energy system designed to provide similar tractive efforts as required in the diesel engine locomotive. The simulation package Advanced Vehicle Simulator (ADVISOR) is used for this study. The simulation has been carried out using the data of the locomotive class WDM-2 running in Indian Railway. A model to determine the rating requirement for various components of the hybrid energy system is developed. The dynamic performance of the developed hybrid energy system is, then, investigated on a user-defined drive cycle to examine the effectiveness of the proposed model.
