The COST (European Cooperation in the Field of Scientific andnTechnical Research) project 216 consists in studying the technology andncharacterization of advanced devices for optical switching and routing.nWithin the working group `Device Modelling' attention is focussed on thenmodeling of optical waveguide switches. As a first effort the groupncompared various modelling techniques for integrated optical waveguidesnby analysing a single rib and two coupled rib III-V waveguides. Thennumerical results give the effective refractive index value for thenfundamental quasi TE-mode in the case of the single waveguide and thencoupling length between the (lowest-order) symmetric and antisymmetricnquasi-TE mode of the coupled waveguides. Some conclusions are formulatednwith respect to the comparison of the obtained numerical data
