Power grid interconnection is helpful to the realization of hydro thermal exchange and regional complementary, and achieves more rational utilization of energy. Research indicated that the transmission capacity of most interprovincial sections is mainly limited by the thermal stability limit and cannot take full advantage of the transmission capacity of the line. When a three-phase short-circuit fault permanently happened on the heavy load line, the power is transferred to other lines on the same channel or a line with a relatively close electrical distance, causing heavy load or overload. As a type of Energy Router, through the research on the control mechanism of UPFC device, this paper puts forward the selection of UPFC installation location and the method of parameter configuration. Based on the research on control mechanism of UPFC device, this paper proposes the scheme selection of UPFC installation location and its parameter configuration method. The heavy load lines of interprovincial section are screened by power flow analysis, and then the corresponding installation sites of UPFC are determined. Active power of line is controlled accurately by using proper configuration parameters and applying the control function of UPFC device. Furthermore, the balanced distribution of power flow in sections and the purpose of improving transmission capacity are achieved. Taking the Shanxi-Hebei section of actual power grid operation as an example, the validity of proposed method is verified by PSD-BPA simulation.
