An improved ultra-wideband (UWB) wide-scan (WC) tightly coupled array (TCA) is proposed which can provide an impedance bandwidth of 7:1 and a scanning angle of ±75° and ±45° for E plane and H plane, respectively. The proposed antenna array is implemented by employing a resistive frequency selective surface (RFSS) and a wide-angle-impedance-matching (WAIM) layer. The designed non-symmetric “tree-branch”-like element is designed together by using a low profile balun, which is placed λ/16 above the ground plane. The array is verified by CST simulations, and the results show that the optimized array can be used for wide-bandwidth andwide scanning applications.
