The design theory and the equivalent circuit model of an aperture-coupled vertically mounted strip antenna were presented. Related circuit element values were calculated with the help of the network analysis. Based on the developed equivalent circuit, a C-band ACVMSA was designed with the help of the hybrid GA optimization algorithm. The computed input impedance was compared to the simulation and measured results, and reasonable agreement was observed. Radiation pattern was also calculated, and its gain and front-to-back ratio are 8.22 dBi and 16.5 dB. In addition, the broadband antenna was designed, and its fractional bandwidth is 18 %. Within the bandwidth, radiation pattern remains without noticeable change. All the results show the validity of the design theory and the usefulness of the proposed equivalent circuit model.
