The influences of oxygen, sulfur, carbon, aluminium, manganese, titanium, tin, antimony and copper in iron on the interfacial tension between the alloy and 50%CaO-50%Al_2O_3 slag were examined at 1580℃. The influences of oxygen and/or sulfur in iron on the interfacial tension were represented by Δσ= -3451n(1+110a_o) when oxygen is present in the melt, Δσ= -1881n(1+7a_s) when sulfur is present in the melt, and Δσ= -3451n(1+110a_o) -188 ln(1+7a_s) when oxygen and sulfur coexist in the melt. In examining the effect of alloying elements in iron on the interfacial tension, the oxygen in iron and its impact on the interfacial tension was taken into consideration. The interfacial tension was found slightly increased with increasing aluminium content in the iron. A decrease of interfacial tension was found with increasing contents of manganese, titanium, tin, antimony and copper in iron. Only minor changes in the interfacial tension were observed with varying carbon content in iron.
