Progress in Color Appearance Models

In meetings just prior to the 1997 AIC Congress in Kyoto, CIE TC1-37, chaired by M.D. Fairchild, established the CIE 1997 Interim Colour Appearance Model (Simple Version), known as CIECAM97s. CIECAM97s was formally published in 1998.' CIE TC1-37 was dissolved shortly thereafter and a reportership, CIE R1-24 assigned to M.D. Fairchild, was established to monitor ongoing developments in color appearance modeling. At the same time, a review of the state-of-the-art in color appearance modeling was also published. It is appropriate at this time to reflect on the landmark creation of CIECAM97s and inquire about what has happened since that time. In the intervening five years, research on color appearance models and their application has continued with ever increasing volume and scope. This paper reviews the advances made in color appearance modeling, outlines CIE efforts to incorporate this new knowledge into revised models, highlights interesting new directions for color appearance models (including models of both spatial and color vision), describes fundamental limitations to the practical application of color appearance models, and concludes with some predictions on what the status of color appearance models and their practical application will be in the future.
