Prediction of Image Reflectance Based on the Measurement of Mechanical and Opitcal Dot Gain

In this paper, we propose a method to separately measure the ink dot transmittance on paper without the ef-fect of optical dot gain. The single dot profiles on paper are measured by a monochrome digital camera attached on a microscope using underneath illumination in order to cap-ture only ink dot distribution (mechanical dot gain). With single dot profile from various ink volumes, the transmit-tance of the ink image on ink jet papers are simulated using dot overlap model in the high resolution grid. The reflect-ance of ink jet images are predicted from the simulated ink image transmittance and the optical point spread function of paper based on the image reflectance model. The result shows that the image reflectance is well predicted if optical point spread function of paper has been adjusted to account for ink penetration into the paper.
