An Adjustment Method of Background Color for Translucent Objects Based on Wiener Estimation Technique

A method to adjust color of background paper is proposed in this article. Exposure levels in the imaging are determined to reproduce texture on the surface for each object. As the results, lightness of the background paper reproduced by printers or monitors is not matched among the objects. In the proposed method, objects with background paper are taken by a digital camera. The digital images are converted into spectral domain by using Wiener estimation technique with higher order terms of the digital signals. Then spectral reflectance image with adjusted background paper is calculated from spectral transmittance of the objects, spectral reflectance of new background paper and gradation coefficient to add gradation effect in the background. Finally, the spectral reflectance image is reconverted to digital image using CIE color matching function and monitor characteristics. The proposed method was applied to translucent objects that create colored shadow on the background paper. The experimental results showed that the shadow was preserved naturally after the background color adjustment.
