Multimedia services are characterized by bursty traffic and Quality of Service restrictions. Network utilization is challenged by variable bit rate sources. Statistical multiplexing reduces the overall burstiness and bandwith utilization to improve the signal quality. In order to bound buffer occupancy, delay and packet loss rate, bandwidth allocation policies are required to manage the multimedia streams and control the traffic generated. This paper focuses in the transmission of multimedia services with assured fair rate allocation at the access node, where current available bit rate is reported from network. Utilization is improved considering long-term and short-term behavior. In long-term range, variations are well controlled by the basic DMRCA algorithm. However, short-term variations require prediction techniques to reduce the overflow and underflow of traffic. As a practical example, a source rate control algorithm fully compatiblw with ABR in ATM networks is discussed and simulation results are presented.
