In Modena, the high-speed Milan-Bologna railway system includes the relocation of about 10 km of the existing line, in a rural area at the limit of the town belt. An artificial tunnel has been designed to underpass the A1 Milan-Naples highway. The artificial tunnel is a box-shaped double track structure, 1950 m in length. A single-track tunnel is set along the main line tunnel, at a deeper level than the main tunnel. Halfway along the main tunnel , the lower tunnel underpasses the principal line tunnel at the depth of 22 m below ground level. The water table is at about 3m depth. A rainwater and oil drainage is designed, provided with a pumping system for lifting the storage liquid volume. The foundation soil is upgraded by jet-grouting treatment. Particular care was taken in the design of a compensation-grouting system for the double-track tunnel in order to eliminate the settlement effects resulting from the succeeding excavation phases for the single-track tunnel.
