Implementation of a robust, reliable, automated system to continuously monitorrndistribution, abundance and behavior of fish in the vicinity of a fish passage facility hasrnenabled the operator of a hydroelectric facility on the east coast of the US to optimize thernoperation of their fish passage facility. Based on hydroacoustic monitoring andrnassessment, the operation of both the passage facility and the power generation facilityrnare automatically adjusted to pass fish when they are present and to generate power whenrnthey are not. Advanced hydroacoustic hardware and software enable the operator tornoptimize both fish passage and power generation – based on the presence, abundance,rnand behavior of fish. In addition, regulatory agencies can be presented with thernappropriate information to document the operator's compliance with passagernrequirements.
