Water is one of the prime natural resource for life to survive on the planet. It isrnessential for every activity to take place, from agriculture to Industry. The ever increasingrnpopulation is putting more and more pressure on this resource. Because of thernindiscriminate use of water, much of the cultivable land is slowly getting converted asrnwasteland unfit for cultivation.rnThe renewable water resources are just less than 1% of total water resourcesrnavailable on the globe. The quality of water is very crucial rather than its availablernquantity. The question before every one of us is as to whether we, the present generationrnwill ensure water resources of quality rather than quantity to the future generation? Todayrnwater in irrigation section using more than 70% of water resources available is being putrnto irrigation use. Ensuring the safe drinking water to every citizen needs utmost attention.rnThe inter state river water dispute are creating conflicts between basin states, over waterrnuse, leading to the rivalry between the amounts of money is being spent every year eitherrnfor flood protection or flood mitigation measures. Effective planning of water resourcesrnin the rivers basins by independent River Basin Authorities and National Water Authorityrnare suggested to manage water resources in the basin and suggest Inter Basin Transfers.rnThe author discussed the above issues and suggested to make the role of National WaterrnDevelopment Authority (NWDA) effective in suggesting water use plans in the riverrnbasin at national level.
