Roller-compacted concrete (RCC) continues to gain recognition as a competitive material forrnconstruction of new gravity dams and for rehabilitation of existing dams. During the past tworndecades, many design details and construction methods have been implemented to improvernthis relatively new dam construction method with the goal of enhancing the product whilernmaintaining the RCC's competitive edge associated mainly with speed of construction.rnMore than 325 RCC gravity dams in excess of 50 feet in height have been constructed to date.rnForty-three of these dams are located in the U.S. Many more RCC gravity dams less than 50rnfeet high have been built as well.rnThe first generation of RCC gravity dams, those built in the 1980s, experienced seepagernthrough lift joints and at shrinkage cracks. Design engineers, owners and contractors arernconstantly looking for new innovative methods to improve durability and aesthetics and to limitrnseepage. Several facing systems are now being used including air-entrained concrete withrncrack inducers and water stops, precast concrete panels, and waterproofing membranes.rnThis paper focuses on important RCC design details, mix designs, and construction means andrnmethods based on five recently constructed medium-size RCC gravity dams in United States.
